DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD FRE(A/E)M(E) OF CAM, GLOUCESTERSHIRE

1. Information in this tree comes from the parish registers, unless otherwise indicated. The convention b = baptism, m = marriage, s = burial is used throughout.

Moses and Elizabeth Fream

2. Although we believe this interpretation of the available information to be correct, there is a link that  we have been unable to verify. We have no record of the baptism of Moses Fream (see  3.5.4.4) nor of his marriage to his second wife Elizabeth. We have searched Gloucestershire. However, there is sufficient supporting evidence to make a convincing case:

(a) that Moses Fream is the son of Moses Fream of Clingar

Moses Fream of Clingar, broadweaver (3.5.4) is referred to as "Moses Fream, senior" in the Bishop's Transcript of his burial in 1720, a term normally used when there is a surviving adult son of the same name (Moses Fream lived on to 1729). There are no other instances of Moses Fream in Gloucestershire apart from these four generations of the name. Moses Fream senior and his first wife Sarah Owen, married in 1681, had children in 1682, 1683 and 1685. There was then a five year gap between Abraham, baptised in 1685  and Aaron, baptised in 1690,  which appears to place Moses there. Moses Fream married Esther Fream, who would be his cousin (see footnote), by licence in Dursley in July 1708. They already had an illegitimate son, John. Esther was 21, Moses would be between 18 and 22. Unfortunately they appeared before a Surrogate in Dursley and so only a brief record of the licence exists and no evidence of Moses' age or father. Moses' son Moses calls his daughters by (what would be) the family names: Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Joan and Bridget

(b) that Moses Fream widower of Esther Fream then married Elizabeth

Esther Fream died on 13 January 1711/2. She was only 25. Moses and Elizabeth Fream had their first child, Elizabeth, on 9 September 1714. Again the absence of any alternative candidate and the use of the family names by their son Moses (especially the relatively unusual Bridget) strengthens the case.

Civil War 1641 - 1648

3. The only entries in the Cam Parish Registers for the period 1641-1648 relate to the families of the Vicar and a parish clerk. No Bishop's Transcripts exist for the period 1639-1660. Nicholas, Joseph and James Fream are believed to have been born in Cam during this period.  Their families are included as a footnote. We believe that all three are grandsons of Thomas Fream and Joyce Donig, but could be children of any of their four sons:

John Fream m Sarah Harrisse 24 November 1628 No recorded children
Richard Fream m Margaret_______ Only recorded child 1650/1
Thomas Fream m Mary Paine 9 November 1638 No recorded children
Dennis Fream m Joane Bendall 18 April 1640 First recorded child  1650/1
