Richard
Longstreath (5.7.1) and Hannah (nee Welstead) who were married in Slimbridge
and had five children baptised in Slimbridge at intervals of 21 months,
23 months, 32 months and 43 months between 1776 and 1786. Hannah was buried
at Slimbridge on 16 December 1788, 24 months after the baptism of her last
child. If she had died in childbirth, the child would have been 15 on 13
October 1804. The couple's second child (and first son) was baptised James
on 10 September 1780, but there is no further record of him and he is believed
to have died in infancy. In the circumstances, it would be natural to name
the child that survived Hannah's death in childbirth after him. The lack
of a baptism entry could also be explained. James' eldest son is
named Richard, presumably after James' father or his elder brother, who
died when James was 3.

The other candidates for father of James Longstreet are Richard's brothers, James and Thomas.
James Longstreath (5.7.3) and Hannah (nee Evans) are known to be living in Slimbridge between 1786 and 1789. Their second known child, Elizabeth, was baptised on 15 February 1789. This does not fit particularly well with the birth of a child between 14 October 1788 and 13 October 1789, who was not baptised, although previous and subsequent children were.
Thomas Longstreath (5.7.5) and Betty (nee Workman) are known to be living in Slimbridge in 1788. Their eldest child. Caelia, was baptised there on 25 May 1788. Their next child, Betty, was baptised in Coaley on 21 November 1791, the day her mother was buried.
